Lviv is the chess capital of the world

On March 1, the opening ceremony of the World Chess Championship among women took place in Lviv. For the period from 2nd to 18th of March 2016, Lviv became the chess capital of the world. Also, a Ukrainian sportsman Mariya Muzychuk, a champion of 2015, will compete for this title as well.

Lviv authorities have thoroughly prepared for the championship: the competition will be held in the Palace of Princes Potockyh, the stylized chess championship flag was raised at the Town Hall in the Market Square, the city trams were also decorated with the flags of the tournament, the Lviv restaurants and cafes offered visitors special chess menu during the championship.

During the tournament 10 matches will be held, two of which have already been played by a Ukrainian Mariya Muzychuk and the contender for the title of champion - a Chinese Hou Yifan. All matches will be live broadcasted, the broadcast will also be hold by leading sports TV channels of the world. On the occasion of the tournament a special chess board has been installed in the building of the Lviv City Council.

As noted by the Lviv city mayor Andriy Sadovyi, today Lviv is open to the world, and the chess championship is another opportunity to show that the city is always happy to welcome the guests.

Such events are extremely important for Ukraine, especially now when the maintenance of a stable image of the European state has come to the forefront. I sincerely wish all the participants of the tournament the brilliant victories and I hope that Ukrainian grandmasters will win more than one trophy and will be able to defend the title of the Champion!
