Friends!

Did you know that on the holiday of Hanukkah, which is celebrated now, all Jews have singing tradition?

This family event is usually celebrated by singing songs near burning Menorah. One of the main symbols of the holiday is whirligig called "dreidel". Not only children but also adults like to play it.

On each side, there is a letter of the Hebrew alphabet - "Nun," "Gimel", "Hey" and "Sheen". Together they form the acronym that translates: "a great miracle happened there." Under the rules of the game Nun means nothing, Gimel – everything, Haye - half, Shin - add rate. Players put a bet into the pot (it can be sweets, raisins, pennies, etc.) and whirligig twists. Which character will fall - as much you will take from the "prize money".

Not surprisingly, one of the main Hanukkah song is called "I have a little whirligig".

The music for this amazing song was written by Samuel Goldfarb in 1920. This composition has become something like «Jingle Bells» for Jews.

Goldfarb was born in New York in a family of 11 children. His parents emigrated from Galicia. From an early age he started to play music and loved it. At the age of 23 Samuel wrote songs for the Jewish theater. Later he became music director of the Bureau of progressive Jewish education in New York. His mission, as he identified, was representation of the upgraded versions of the spiritual songs for American Jews that could help them to rethink their meaning.

"I have a little whirligig" is a composition that became the undisputed hit. It is believed that its melody influenced the popular music of Broadway and Hollywood of that period. And yet the family all over the world love to sing it in the days of Hanukkah.

Friends, I wish you to sing your favorite songs all the time. They will not only cheer you, but also will strength the spirit!
