The United Nations received the new leader. He is a former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres.

The newly elected chairman of the UN promised to be "the honest broker, the builder of bridges and those who try to create conditions for understanding." Although, it was previously planned, that a woman will get the position, moreover – she should be from Eastern Europe. But Guterres was the only candidate, who didn’t cause questions and quarrels. Also, Guterres had held the post of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for the past 11 years. The issue he worked with is still one of the main and most painful in the world, because only at the end of 2015 the number of refugees reached 65 million.

Who is he, the new secretary general of the UN? He is a socialist, a man with a strong temperament, no doubt, a great friend of Israel. During his first official visit to Israel in 1993, Guterres (then head of the Socialist Party of Portugal) easily found a common language with the the Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Barak. They were friends for several decades, and now Barack frankly welcomed Guterres on the new appointment. In Israel politicians believe - Antonio Guterres is a person you can rely on, he is a man of his word and deeds.

How this appointment may affect the Ukraine? According to forecasts, Guterres can radically change the organization. Recently the UN has lost its credibility, because organization didn’t prolong real actions, it was just expressing concern. In social media it became jokingly known as "Organization of Concerned Nations." And the new secretary-general is known for its strong-willed character and the ability to "stretch" even uncomfortable, but very important decisions. Firstly, he is going to reform the UN. In addition, Antonio Guterres wants to start new milestone diplomacy for peace, when the world's conflicts are resolved, but not created. If these intentions will become real, Ukraine could have a benefit from these changes.
