Friends!

99 years ago died famous physicist, electrical engineer and inventor with Ukrainian roots - John Puliui. It was he who first invented the X-rays.

Future scientist was born in the Ternopil region, in a religious family. Every day, he was used to walk 10 kilometers from home to school! There he joined the secret society "Hromada", which was engaged in the promotion of Ukrainian history and culture. Puliui was a true patriot - he knew that in order to glorify his homeland, he need to learn a lot. Parents wanted him to become a priest, so they sent him to study at the seminary in Vienna.

In Vienna Ivan began to attend public lectures on astronomy, mathematics and physics. He liked it so much that he decided to ignore the will of theparents, and instead being a priest, he entered the University of Vienna.

There he began to design. Soon he invented a device for measuring the mechanical equivalent of heat. Later - "lamp of Pul'uj" through which appeared invisible radiation by the help of special screen/ Do you recognize something?

John Puliui worked in the same laboratory, together with Wilhelm Roentgen. Ukrainian scientist told him, what were the X-rays, showed the example on the human skeleton. But Ivan Puliui did not manage to explain his invention, but Roentgen did. When William received the Nobel Prize for studying X-rays Puliui felt helpless because he knew - this invention colleague could do only with his lamp and best practices. He ran around the house screaming: "My lamp! My lamp! ". But people did not know that.

But Puliui left a remarkable legacy not only in physics and electrical engineering. However, with Panteleimon Kulish they translated "Bible" into Ukrainian! Ivan Puliuiwas the main publisher, for the latest work on the book he invited Nechui-Levitsky. In the Russian Empire distribution of the book was not allowed, but the military leadership of Japan agreed to distribute copies among the first Ukrainian prisoners, which they took during the Russo-Japanese War.

Ivan Puliui had a wonderful family. His wife was his student - Catherine Stozytska, 18 years younger than him. The couple had15 children, but only six survived. The family lived in the Czech Republic. Father wanted children to know that they were Ukrainian, so each summer he hired Ukrainian teachers for them.

Ivan Puliui died in Prague, where he was buried. After that his sons Paul and George studied in Lviv Ukrainian school, and the oldest son Alexander joined the ranks of Cossack riflemen and in 1920 participated in hostilities of Ukrainian Galician Army.

Friends, do you know, what creed had this famous scientist? "There is no greater pride for the intelligent man, than to protect their honor and national awards and to work for the good of his people and to give him a better future." I think this words will never lose relevance.

This weekend, under my support in Kiev was provided a show of Israeli theater "Secret Sound". I am grateful to everyone who came to see the show "Parallel World" - a masterpiece without words, that showed us all the horror and pain of the Holocaust, which Jewish people survived.

I was pleased that in addition to many highly-esteemed members of the Jewish community of Kyiv, came readers of my page, who wanted to learn more about the Holocaust. This is the main idea of this year's Remembrance Day. More than two hundred people spent the evening together in remembrance of the 6 million Jews who were deprived of the future.

Separately, I would like to thank Rabbi Jonathan Markovich for his strong prayer that united us all before watching the performance. And of course, all the actors and the director of the theater "Secret Sound" because they were able to show these painful moments of history, terrible moments of Jewish life in the ghetto. I think this evening was memorable for all of us.

I also will remember it for a long time. First, because I saw your eyes - the eyes of people, full of support and understanding. Second, because now in front of me is a gift that brought the theater - Menora, carved on basalt rocks from the Golan Heights. It symbolizes the unity of the Jewish people, which was felt that evening by every visitor.

Thank you, friends! See you next time.

Today is a birthday of the first astronaut of independent Ukraine Leonid Kadeniuk!

He was born in Chernivtsi region in the family of rural teachers. Once, to become an astronaut, he added a year to his metric, because was allowed to train as an astronaut Only at the age of 17 years. He was allowed because people believed that one day the boy will appear with the flowers near the spaceport. And so it happened.

In 1997, he had been flying in space for 17 days in the international expedition.

Ukrainian flew on the shuttle "Columbia" which was filmed in the movie "Armageddon" with Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. During filming Kadeniuk trained at NASA. Unfortunately, the shuttle was burnt down in 2003, when he returned to Earth.

Did you know that in order to wake up the astronauts on the ship, they use special songs alarms, that are chosen by members of the expedition? Leonid Kadeniuk chose anthem of Ukraine. So several times during the fly expedition got up with the music of Michael Verbitsky.

I heartily congratulate this great Ukrainian on his Birthday! I wish you health, joy, harmony and peace!

Friends.

Today in Ukraine and the world people mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Holocaust means "burnt" in Greek. The deliberate destruction of 6 million people can not leave a scar on the heart of humanity.

Almost 2.5 million Jews were killed on the territory of the Soviet Union, and in particular in Ukraine. After the occupation here appeared a network of ghettos, the largest of which was in Lvov. Ukraine Jews suffered systematic destruction, the example of which was the tragedy of Babin Yar.

Ukrainians understand well the pain that today sounds, like the echo in our hearts. I do not doubt this. For this is our common history, filled with strands terrible trouble, which managed to overcome.

Do you know why is day of remembrance celebrated on the 27th of January? On this day in 1945 the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front liberated prisoners from the largest concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau near Oswiecim in Poland.

Ukraine in 2005 was one of the initiators of the UN resolution on the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Friends! We have to remember. This tragedy will never happen again, because now there is a mighty State of Israel, which gave a lot of energy to its people to feel secure. Unfortunately, in Europe, they were defenseless.

Only in those countries , that gave resistance to the Nazis, most Jews managed to survive. For example, the King of Denmark said to prime minister: "If the Germans would force Jews to wear yellow Danish star, I will be the first who would put it on myself." Instead, the Romanian prime minister Ion Antonescu scored particularly bloodthirsty. Even when the order of the "final solution of the Jewish question" was only on its way, he chose his tactics. He loadedfive thousand Jews into trains. Subsequently, they were poisoned with gas. Even Hitler complained that Antonescu was "more radical than they are."

Only good people helped Jews, even than they could pay for it on their own lives. These people are now called Righteous Among the Nations. In Ukraine officially there are more than 2.5 thousand of them. And how many people we don't know about, stories, only their families know..eternal gratitude and respect you!

The theme of this year's Day of Remembrance is education. All generations have to know how it was and why cannot repeat again. Go to the Holocaust Museum or watch the movie "The Pianist", or read the book on the topic. We remember together.

Friends, do you know that Israeli scientists invented a device that can diagnose cancer and other16 different human diseases via breath?

Researchers at the University of Technion in Haifa designed a special tube that uses gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and artificial intelligence to analyze breath.

In the experiment using the invention was involved 1,400 people, some of whom were sick, and the rest – were not. The device was able to diagnose the disease in 9 cases out of 10.

Among the diseases that can be detected by an Israeli device - eight types of cancer, Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease, pulmonary hypertension and others.

While the method is tested now it is not a fundamental element for the approval of the diagnosis. But the inventors sure - soon it will be commonplace to use. Moreover, the device can bring real benefits for detections of diseases at an early stage. The level of survival can raise foe several times, and it means it can help to save thousands of lives.

Friends, health - is the greatest wealth that a person has. Therefore, we must be attentive to our body, feel the slightest deviations, which can be signs of the emergence of diseases. Be sure to pass the health test. Hopefully in the future we will be available to use all possible innovations in order to live a long and healthy life.

Today I want to tell you the story of a young Ukrainian playwright Anna Mashutina, better known under the pseudonym "Anna Yablonsky." On the 21st of January, 2011, she died as a result of the terrorist attack at the airport "Domodedovo" when flied to receive the award "Personal file - 2010". One of the first she came out of the plane, quickly passed passport control but was unable to go further because of sudden explosion. Then a suicide bomber managed to kill 35 people.

Anna Yablonsky was born in Odessa in 1981. Her father is a famous journalist Gregory Jablonski. Firstly, daughter also followed his steps, wrote to the women's magazines. Later she discovered poetry and afterwords published prose stories in local media. In the early 2000s, she decided to try to write drama, and it just succeeded. However, at the home people did not notice her talents, while abroad she was praised. Father of Hanna said: "In order to begin to put her plays in Ukraine, my daughter had to die." During the girl’s life, only one play was set in Odessa - "The Doors." Instead, now her plays may be seen on the stages of Britain, Holland, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany and Poland and, of course, Ukraine.

In his author's talent, she had a deep intuition. One of the latest posts on her page in the "Live Journal" was: "I think a little time is left for me”. This intuition can be noticed in her plays. For example, now in Ukrainian theaters you can see "Family Scene" under the authorship of Yablonska. This performance is about love and war, alienation of friends. It would seem, how could a woman who died a few years before the outbreak of war between the two countries, predict that?

Several years ago, the father of Anna published a collection of her plays and presented it into the Ukrainian theater in Odessa, where "Family Scene" was set. He believes and hopes that he can perpetuate on paper the whole set of his daughter, then 3 dozen of works.

Friends, life is unpredictable. So engage that really brings you pleasure, love your family and embody the dreams. Do not be afraid and do live full!

Friends, 535 years ago, in the Italian Bologna was printed first examples of the Torah.

The first printing machine with Jewish letters did Abraham Ben-Haim dei Tintori. He published the first version of the Torah. Its text was special, because for the first time were accompanied by labels that facilitate reading. In addition, the Pentateuch contained rabbi Rashi’s comments (he was the great Jewish leader of the Middle Ages). Publication is classified as incunabula - book that was published before the 1st of January, 1501, when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing method of moving letters.

Some experts believe the historical significance of that Torah can be compared, for example, with Gutenberg’s Bible. This format of printing (with comments and symbols) is used even today.

Incidentally, one of the copies of this unique Torah recently was sold at the Christie's auction in Paris. First, it estimated at about one million euros. But this rare was bought for 2,785,500 euros! This is the highest amount ever paid for a Jewish print edition. Imagine, for the last hundred years only three copies of incunabula Torah was sold at auction.

I congratulate all on the Day of Unity of Ukraine!

On this day in 1919 in Kiev on the Sofia area was proclaimed the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian lands, which united Ukrainian and the West Ukrainian National Republics into a single and indivisible Ukrainian nation. The text included important words: "Henceforth all the lands of Ukraine, separated by centuries - Galicia, Bukovina, Transcarpathia and Ukraine Dnieper region - will be one, big Ukraine. Dreams, for which the best sons of Ukraine lived and died, became a reality. Henceforth ever be one, independent Ukrainian People's Republic. "

But a few weeks after that the Bolsheviks seized Kyiv, then the Poles - eastern Galicia, and Czechoslovakia- Transcarpathia. Unfortunately, history is cyclical. And after Ukraine gained independence in 1992, its territory was stolen again. This time - in the Donbass and the Crimea.

Unity is the target, in which enemies are trying to shot. Guarantor of integrity can only be a strong army, so I again want to express my infinite respect and gratitude to all those who defend us in Eastern Ukraine.

And in addition, we need complete unity. For that people annually create a "live chain" as a symbol of communality of people. In fact, we support this relationship every day when we become a side-by-side to address important issues. We have to be together in global terms, to stop corruption and change our country for the better.

Friends, I wish you all peace and unity for the benefit of Ukraine! Together we are force!

On this day in 1978, the Ukrainian dissident Olexa Hirnyk committed self-immolation. He was 66 years old. He burned himself in a symbolic place - the grave of Taras Shevchenko in Kaniv, in protest against Russification.

Olexa Hirnyk was born on the 28th of March, 1912 in the Carpathian town Bogorodchany. His grandfather and father were educators, mother - a simple peasant.

Olexa studied at a Polish school and later in the Ukrainian Stanislavsky school. Parents wanted him to continue his studies at the seminary, but Hirnyk went the other way. He joined the "PLAST", "Enlightenment", other youth nationalist organizations. He wanted to study as the philosopher at Lviv University, but he was drafted to the Polish army. There he spoke only Ukrainian, read "Kobzar". According to statements against Polish authorities and calls for the independence of Ukraine he was sentenced to five years in prison. He was providing his arrest at the camps of Bereza Kartuska, Lviv, Krakow, Tarnow. Two years later, during the German invasion of Poland, Olexa escaped from prison.

But he was imprisoned again soon. Because of his character (he loved truth a lot), he stood up for Polish, which workers of NKVD sent into wagons to expulsion. He was convicted again - now "for treason" into concentration camps for 8 years. This time Hirnyk was sent to Norilsk and Magadan.

He returned from exile and married a girl named Carolina. They had two sons: Markiyan and Eugene. Family lived in Kalush, Olexa worked as an engineer at the brick factory. He was very concerned about the fate of Ukraine, its culture and language. He secretly prepared leaflets against Russification.

On that day he told his family he was going to Lviv, and he went to Kyiv, and then - to Kaniv. He prepared bag with two canisters of gasoline. He chose the place on the northern slope of Mount Chernecha. First, put there leaflets. At the 3 pm the night poured gasoline on himself and set the clothes on fire. "I was walking upright thorny. Not erred, not erred. My objection is that the truth is itself, not Moscow lies from beginning to end. My protest is the experiences, torture Ukrainian nation. My protest is that Prometheus act, the rebellion against violence and oppression. My protest -is the words of Shevchenko, and I am his only student and performer "- wrote Olexa Hirnyk.

His lifeless body was found in the morning. Police took leaflets, tried to convince the family that Olexa was killed in a car accident. And they felt that the truth was different, because the house searches began. Later the doctor of the ambulance told Carolina the truth.

Despite the ban, every year on the 21th of January someone put red viburnum to the place of Olexa’s death. This way people supported his protest against the destruction of the Moscow communist invaders. Years passed, and now this act of Olexa is the extraordinary expression of patriotism and self-sacrifice on the background of despair. He inspire never to leave hope and fight for your country to the last.

In a few hours in the United States will start an extremely important event - the inauguration of President-elected Donald Trump and vice president Michael Pence.

All the world is waiting the ceremony. And no wonder - the new US president and his course will affect any other country. And Ukraine in particular.

These elections in America were one of the loudest. The country even experienced the "hand of the Kremlin", when Russian hackers broke into the servers of the Democratic Party. Now America is uniquely responsive to the inauguration of Trump. There are people that support President-elect. They have already bought souvenirs for the holiday and the T-shirts with his name. There are those who came out to massive protests, including well-known artists such as Cher, Mark Ruffalo, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro and others. One man even tried to set fire to himself at the Trump hotel, but was rescued.

In any case, Ukraine and America should develop friendships. This time for the inauguration of US President went a record number of Ukrainian representatives- about a hundred. They are the deputies of Ukraine, representatives of the Presidential Administration. I hope they will put maximum efforts in order to establish a productive dialogue between the countries.

Today we say goodbye to Barack Obama and Joe Biden, I would like to thank them for the support and assistance they have provided to Ukraine. It is unlikely that it would have been the same if the US did not apply sanctions against Russia. They helped us to restrain the aggressor and his appetites. Remember the recent visit Joe Biden in Kyiv. Imagine, after receiving the Liberty Medal's, his name was thundering across the world, and he arrived on an official visit to Kyiv! I hope that Michael Pence, which will soon be responsible on Ukrainian issue at the White House will follow Biden’s steps and built a partnership between the two countries on mutual respect and support.

It is difficult to imagine what awaits us next. But we have to believe and hope for the best.

Today the Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate the great holiday - Epiphany or Theophany.

People call this day in different ways: Epiphany or Jordan. On this holiday, people remember how Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by Saint John the Baptist. In the Bible it is said that during the baptism of Jesus from heaven like a dove descended the Holy Spirit, and the voice of God was heard. That’s why this holiday is called Epiphany.

Epiphany or Theophany is the day when all the reservoirs of water is healing. So on this day people drink holy water and dive into it.

Young people are actively involved in the festive traditions. Every year the number of those, who dive to Epiphany hole, known as Jordan, is becoming more.

Another good tradition – people should not work on this holiday, you should dedicate a day to cleansing of the soul from sins. You need to spend a holiday in a good mood and warm atmosphere, you cannot complain, lie or slander.

Friends! On this day, I wish you pure thoughts and actions throughout the year! Be sincere, friendly and everything around you will be bright and good.

Let the joy in your home rule,
Christ was baptized, gives peace of the world,
To have you good health,
To fill you with wisdom and strength,
For each day from today,
Surely only bring joy!

75 years ago, from Kharkov to Cologne was departed a train with Ostarbeiteren - "Eastern workers". So in Germany were called those workers, which the Germans took from the eastern occupied territories for forced labor.

The first Ostarbeiteren were citizens of Transcarpathia and Galicia in 1939. And mass phenomenon has started since 1942. Overall, during World War II for the forced labor in Germany were taken 2.2 million Ukrainians.

First, the Nazis hatched a plan "Ost", which involved the extermination of millions of residents of the occupied territories. Later, due to the lack of manpower and for support of the leadership of the Third Reich, was decided to use the "slave" power.

The offer to work in Germany, was served to Ukrainian as a candy in gold wrapper. Volunteer workers were promised decent wages, constant food and good living conditions. More than this - the families of those who worked in the Reich, was promised to be cared and helped. Thousands of people have decided to go and try a better life. But that was not planned.

Under the sweet promises hided the bitter truth. Volunteer character of sets, selection of employees by occupation, was quickly replaced by violent approach and true "round-up" for employees. Germany did not have enough volunteers, workers did they job well. People were exported without their consent, forced to work for private companies. Workers lived in camps under strict supervision, all had to wear blue stripes with the words "OST" ( "East"). It made them without rights, without provisions, could be degrade and use. Ukrainian earned less - 30% of the salary of the employee-German, but they needed to pay for "camp" housing and food.

Escape was impossible. One and only attempt - and a man were killed or sent to concentration camps.

In 1946, the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal acknowledged that forced labor was a crime against humanity and violation of international law. The Germans decided to pay those, who affected. On the 1st of September, 1999 in Ukraine humanitarian payments received over 600 thousand persons and payments reached almost 400 thousand marks.

Thousands of lives have been destroyed, families - lost. We should all remember this.

Today I would like to talk with you about Yanuariy Bortnik. Perhaps not all of you know him, but this wonderful Ukrainian theater director and actor was shot at the NKVD prison in Kiev on the 16th of January, 1938. I want to tell you about his fate.

He was born in an ordinary peasant family in the hamlet Near the Forest near the village Ozerna, in Ternopil region. Later the family moved to Ternopil, Yanuariy entered the Ukrainian school. Man enchanted theater and music. He tried to watch every play of the Lviv Theatre Company "Russian Conversation", he even had favorite actors there.

This passion completely changed his life. Once, Les Kurbas, famous director, about whom I told you before, arrived to the Ternopil. Yanuariy decided to quit school and went to his newly established theater. The guy had bad diction, but he practiced conscientiously, sang in the choir and even danced in the crowd scenes of ballet. His parts were indicated on the posters under the pseudonym "H. Zahrebelny. "

After his teacher Les Kurbas Yanuariy Bortnik moved to Kyiv. His acting became so professional, that he was offered to lead Belotserkovskuyu drama school, which later became a creative association "Berezil." Art critics have noted that Bortnik was able to put the best comedy, and to the play he always brought something interesting. Thus, they were unique.

All of them saw that Bortnik was- a master of his craft. So soon he headed a new theater of small forms in Kharkiv, called "Funny proletarian." He changed several theaters in Kharkiv. He even moved to work to Dnipropetrovsk.

Throughout his musical comedy perceived extremely warm. While the Soviet authorities believed that the operetta was something very unserious, theater experts could use it in order to communicate with people through art. Yanuariy Bortnik was one of the best in this.

Unfortunately, Yanuariy Demyanovich did not have time to realize himself fully. When he was only 40 years old, Bortnik was arrested for nationalism. In a year he was executed. Heavy fate awaited his wife, actress Anna Babiyivna. Immediately after the murder of her husband she was kidnapped by representatives of the NKVD and sent to the Gulag. She returned home in 5 years, but could not come back to the theater.

Eternal memory.

On this day 25 years ago Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the musical version of the National Anthem of Ukraine.

"Ukraine has not perished, nor her glory, nor freedom,
To us, fellows-Ukrainians, fate shall smile once! "

These words are great and prophetic, as well as special and unique music! Also the history of this song is special.

Anthem was created in 1862. According to legend, one evening Ukrainian poet and folklorist Paul Chubynsky was sitting with Serbian students. They sang a song in which the words were “срце бије и крв лије за своју слободу”.

Chubinsky was so impressed with this line that he went into another room and returned in a short time with the text "Ukraine is still alive." Some scholars believe that he was also influenced by motives of mazurka «Jeszcze Polska nie zgineła ...», which later became the Polish anthem.

The poetic text was published in Lviv magazine "Meta" in 1863. There the future author of music - priest Mikhail Verbitsky saw the. He was a famous composer and put all his skills into work. So, the song became unique. It absorbed not only strong words, but profound, full of spiritual notes music. Ukrainian anthem has even some liturgical character.

In 1939, the song was used as the anthem of the Carpathian Ukraine. Instead, the Soviet Union decided that "Ukraine is still alive" was too dangerous and can cause separatist sentiment, so it was ignored.

I believe that this wonderful composition of Chubinsky and Verbitsky is the pearl which we should be proud of. Its melody touches the soul, and the words -are prophetic.

"Our enemies will die, like a dew upon the sun,
And we shall rule, brothers, in one side! "

45 years ago the USSR KGB launched operation "Block", in which were arrested dozens of representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Among them - Vasyl Stus, Vyacheslav Chornovil, Eugene Sverstyuk, Ivan Svitlychny and others. These people were dissidents, political views of which did not coincide with the "tone of authority." But these people were respected for their position, their words were important to the community. Therefore, they did significant work and should be banned by authorities. In the cruel way, so others would never want to serve their example.

The plan was cunning. First on the train in Moscow - Prague for improper filling of documents was detained Jaroslav Dobosh – Belgian citizen. During the search guardians found a camera, on which was filmed the book "Dictionary of rhymes Ukrainian language" by Svyatoslav Karavansky, who was then a political prisoner. It was not a surprise. Dobosh was spied while he was in Kyiv, KGB new that he met Ivan Svitlychny. Residence of this Ukrainian poet was a kind of club of national consciousness of youth, a debate club to discuss national idea. Belgian was forced to confess that he wanted to establish the connection between the resistance movement in Ukraine and foreign nationalist centers. He was sent abroad and the local dissidents began to be hunt.

Mass arrests started. This wave had finally put an end to any resistance. Overall for the year more than one hundred people were arrested, among them 89 were convicted for anti-Soviet activities. This arrests were used to make the people remain silent.

Intimidation, arrests and other methods were not only to stop the people, much more to stop the phenomenon - samizdat. Thanks to newspapers, magazines and books, which were published through the efforts of Ukrainian nationalists, their ideas spread among people. Unfortunately, the operation almost succeeded. Its distribution decreased.

But the supporters of prisoners did not pin their hands. They prepared and distributed a new, sixth number samizdat magazine "Ukrainian Journal", edited by Vyacheslav Chornovil, who had been in jail for three months.

But after the arrests, samizdat’s value increased. Ukrainians learned more about people, who fought for independence. Their ideas spread among people like a flu. Some say that from that moment began a "domino effect" that led to the independence of Ukraine.

Friends! The struggle for the fate of the state - is a complex thing. On the way of those, who participate in it there are often serious obstacles. But no one and nothing can stop people, who believe that their own homeland can gain success.

Today, on the New Year eve (Old style), Ukrainians gather around the family table. Its second Christmas Eve - time to enjoy the warm company, kutia and other tasty dishes.

In regions of Ukraine second Christmas Eve, or Malanka, is celebrated differently. For some - it is extremely important holiday, but, for example, Galician celebrate it later – on the 18th of January. Nevertheless, I believe that the main thing is not the day, but priceless Ukrainian rituals.

In the evening young people dress in masks and go out to neighbors to sing some traditional songs and earn money. There is a special tradition called "driving a Goat." Of course, it has changed significantly while extant. Now it is a real comedy show where guys go to homes with a symbolic star. Goat is played by disguised guy. By the way, this ceremony made a well-known Ukrainian phrase “to drive a goat”, which means “to seek adventure after meal or feast”.

Friends, remember the Ukrainian traditions and try to dive into their maelstrom! It is extremely interesting. For example, be sure to go singing or invite them to your home. Christmas greetings, wishes of health and prosperity will give you a good mood and always come true! Support guests by money – and it will return a hundredfold.

And wait for the people to sow in the morning. Remember that for the signs, at the Old New Year man should come home first, because he brings happiness.

Good mood, family warmth and harmony!

Generous evening, good evening, friends!

On this day 108 years ago, was born Mary Primachenko - unmatched and original Ukrainian artist.

So far there are disputes about how to spell the name of the master of the brush. She responded for the matter differently. Once she said that Pryimachenko was right spelling because her parents were from “pryymaks”, other times - that Primachenko, because “pryymaks” were called “primacks” in her village. At least, the last official documents of Mary were signed "Primachenko."

Maria was born in Kyiv region, in the village. When she was seven years old, she became ill. The diagnosis was terrible - polio. The disease has left its mark on the health of woman. An artist always walked with crutches and felt terrible pain.

Partial disability allowed her to go out less to the work and more to stay home. There she discovered the world of art. Seriously she began to paint when she was 17. She painted her house with blue clay. Neighbors liked the bright building, they wanted such a "design" for themselves. So Maria started to paint other buildings. For the work, she received the first reward - pig.

Works of Primachenko - are so-called "naive art". Although the artist was poorly educated, in her mind there was another wonderful world. She drew unusual animals, but she has never been to the zoo. Only once Mary saw real exotic animals. In adulthood outstanding director Sergei Parajanov led her to the circus.

All her life the artist loved only one man - Vasyl. She met with him during his studies in Kiev. They got married, but soon he, infantry lieutenant, was taken to war. There he managed to get news of the birth of a son of Fedyr and even wrote a reply. But it was his last letter. After that Mary forgot about her personal life, even though she had plenty of admirers. She hoped that Vasyl will return.

Together with her son, they lived in a quandary. But the artist never took money for her work, only bestowed them.

Maria Primachenko died at the age of 88 years. During a lifetime, she created more than 650 works. Her masterpieces visited exhibitions in different cities around the world. There is even a legend that in Paris Primachenko’s pictures saw Pablo Picasso. He said: "If she lived in France, she would be more known than I am." Mary allegedly also revealed the album with the works of Picasso. She said: "In our village no one will understand this."

Son and grandson of the artist also became artists. In the middle of this amazing women there was an own world, full of special thoughts, ideas and experiences. She had different dreams. For example, she wanted to gather different artists and paint all the buildings in their cities. "... For the miracle that would have produced - would not be only blossomed gardens Kyiv. Buildings would laugh to people ... ".

Friends, we have to see a beauty around us and making efforts to make world more beautiful. This way, we will fulfill one of the wishes of Ukrainian artist Mary Primachenko, that was unique star that world.

Today I want to tell you the story of Petro Mohyla - the extraordinary man who remained as a significant figure in the history of Ukraine, its religious, educational and even political life. Yesterday it was the anniversary of his birth - 420 years. And today is the anniversary of his death, 370 years. Let us remember who he was.

Petro Mohyla came from the ancient Moldavian boyar family. His father Simeon Mohyla was the ruler of Moldavia and warlord of Wallachia and his mother Margaret was Hungarian princess. Simeon was poisoned by the plot, the family was in danger. So 11-year-old Petro was sent to stud yto Lviv. Later he graduated from the Zamojski Academy and studied in various universities of Holland, and probably France. Mohyla was an extremely intelligent man, fluent in Greek, Latin, Polish.

He could even take Moldavian throne! But he went to war. The future pastor was involved in two famous battles of Polish and Cossack troops against the Turks - in Cecora and Khotin.

Unfortunately, we don’t know how Petro lived after the battle and till he became the Archimandrite of Kiev-Pechersk Monastery at the age of 30. Unfortunately, at the time he was treated with skepticism. He was criticized for his high origin and nationality. But Petro Mohyla’s activity proves that he was one of the greatest patriots of Ukraine.

As Archimandrite, he started publishing. In 5 years in the Kyiv-Pechersk printing were made more than 15 publications, including books of Mohyla, as author. One of the most famous is - "Formulary." "We need to learn, so Rus’ would not be foolish," - said educator. The knowledge and power of education – in this Petro Mohyla believed extremely.

And in a complete peace in the spirit world. He sought harmony between all churches, because true faith that lives in the human heart, cannot hate others.

At the age of 34 years Petro Mohyla became Metropolitan of Kyiv. At this time, he realized his dream - combined school founded by and Kyiv Brotherhood. He created the Kiev-Bratska board, which we now know as the Kiev-Mohyla Academy - one of the most prestigious universities. At that times, it was one of the best in Eastern Europe. Students there were taught history, logic, rhetoric, theological disciplines.

Why did Petro Mohyla achieved all that he wanted? I think the reason was his special nature. He was a demanding man, even rigid. But firstly, according to himself, and afterwards – to others.

Metropolitan died at the age of 50. A few days before his death, he made a spiritual testament. Who became the main successor, how do you think? Kiev-Bratsk board. He commanded 81,000 zlotys to it, all his real estate, jewelry and library. Petro Mohyla was buried at left at the main course of the Assumption Cathedral in Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

Friends, Petro Mohyla was an extremely important figure in the history of Ukraine. In terms of inter-religious hatred he represented peace and love, developed publishing and more - raised the level of education in the country to a new level. Eternal memory.

Yesterday, Israeli flag appeared at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany. Thus, the country expressed its support in connection with the terrorist attack in Jerusalem.

I think such things are the symbol of friendship and a great understanding of the terrible affliction, which is terrorism. Countries that experienced it, have some scars on the heart, which hurt when tragedy is repeated elsewhere. Together we are stronger, so I'm very grateful to the authorities of Germany and all those who supported Israel during this difficult time.

Unfortunately, recovering from the attack will not be easy. Yesterday were buried those, who died in the attack. They are lieutenant Yael Yekutiel, who was only 20 years old and cadets Shir Hadzhadzh (22 years) Shir Chur (20 years) and Erez Orbach (20 years). Hundreds of Israelis came to say goodbye to them, because for everyone - it's personal pain. I lack the words to express all the sorrow that now reigns in my soul.

Unfortunately, this is not the end. Along with the suffering of others there are always those fiends, who rejoice in another's grief. Tonight, Arab teenagers (aged 13 to 20 years old) painted walls of the Old City in graffiti expressing support to the attack. "Yesterday's attack is just the beginning" - is one of the slogans that were there. Villains are arrested. And I would argue - Israel is not scared by some stupid provocateurs.

For such cases, there is a simple truth of life. True suffer will be felt by those, who cherish hatred in their heart. Everything returns like a boomerang. But this significant support will also come back to those who expressed it on the right time too.

Today is the birthday of outstanding Armenian and Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov.

He was born in a family of antique dealer, was the third child in the family. His father Joseph dreamed that his children will continue his work. But Sergei fell in love with cinema. Father could not forgive his son, was offended of him all his life. And family talent once saved Parajanov – when he had no work, he resaled antiques.

Paradjanov’s career began in Tbilisi State Conservatoire, then he moved to study to Moscow. There he graduated from the directing department of VGIK. After training he was sent to the Kiev studio feature films as director.

The main peral in worklist of Sergei Paradjanov, which brought international recognition to the director was the motion picture "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". I think you all know this wonderful film, which received 39 international awards, 28 awards at film festivals in twenty-one countries. So I will tell you some interesting facts about it, you might not know. Last known molfar Nechay Michael, who lived in Ivano-Frankivsk consulted Parajanov about Hutsul traditions. Moreover, he later admitted that international recognition of "Shadows" was made by molfar spell.

Sergei Paradjanov just wanted to experience the life of western Ukrainian people, so he refused to live in a hotel, just settled among the Hutsul. They became friends with the director, gave him embroidered shirts, icons, treated Banu. He brought them "Kiev"cakes and taught to cook dolma.

A premiere of the legendary film was generally thwarted. On the 4th of September , 1965 in the cinema "Ukraine" all listened with a sinking to the Parajanov introductory word when the word took Dziuba - known public figure. Vyacheslav Chornovil and Vasyl Stus were with him. They announced the arrests of Ukrainian intellectuals. Show has become the first public protest against Soviet rule. From this affected not only the protesters, but the authors of the picture - it was forbidden for a long time. And Paradjanov was not even angry, he supported the position of the protesters.

For this he started to chase, so he had to go to Armenia. He returned to Kyiv in 1971 and for several years was arrested and sentenced for "homosexuality." But in fact the sentence was about "Ukrainian nationalism." The only one who publicly testified against Parajanov was "a member of the Communist Party." Others flatly refused. Architect Michael Senin, whom the KGB forced to support the slander committed suicide.

Parajanov released from prison by the artists who imbued his fate. Its told that "muse of Russian avant-garde" Lilya Brik personally asked Leonid Brezhnev about the dismissal of the director. In addition, famous Western artists signed an appeal on his behalf. Government banned him to live in Ukraine, Living in so he moved to Tbilisi.

At the end of the life of the artist was suffering from lung cancer. "Everyone knows that I have three homelands. I was born in Georgia, worked in Ukraine and in Armenia I am going to die, "- he said. Sergei Paradjanov really died in Yerevan, and his wife and son left in Kiev.

Sergei Parajanov left us immortal films that we always have to remember, and increasingly view.

Jewish shrines in Ukraine are a real pearl of the common history of our two nations. Many are amazing and inspiring. This time I want to tell you an amazing story of Shargorodskii synagogue - the oldest stone synagogue in Ukraine, called the "most attractive". Analog of it you will not find anywhere else.

This gem on the East was built back in 1589. It became not only the heart of the Jewish community, but also the fortress that saved people from the attacks of the Turks and Tatars. The synagogue was a real defensive structure, built of stone. It was very built in very interesting way with thick walls, secret paths and underground facilities even for holding prisoners.

For 27 years, when Podillya was ruled by Kamyanetskiy eyyalet, Turks used the synagogue as a mosque. Later, it was turned back to the Jews. There is a legend, that in the first half of the eighteenth century, Rabbi Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Hasidic movement, preached in the synagogue.

The synagogue survived in World War II. And what fate befell her, do youknow? The Bolsheviks placed made it a part of juice plant!

Fortunately, the interior of this magnificent historical monument partially preserved, however, unfortunately, the restorenow did not start. However, there is a plus - the synagogue was returned to the balance of the Jewish community of Shargorod.

Friends, major attractions that combine our two nations must be protected and appreciated. For this is our common history, the history of Ukrainian land and the Jewish people. I am sure that the mere existence of such architectural works of art - is a great proof of the ancient friendship of our peoples.

However, when life began to bear fruits, punch waited on the other side. First his wife died of tuberculosis, then - diphtheria took three of the five children of the family. Younger wife’s sister helped Eliezer with children. Later they were married.

On this day 137 years ago, was born the famous choreographer and “dance magician "Vasily Costiv, better known under the pseudonym Verhovinets.

He was born in the village of Staryi Mizun, in the family of a poor peasant. He went to an ordinary local school, and at the age of 12 moved to the city. There he studied at the seminary at Stavropigiyska Institute. Later, he entered the seminary teacher school at Sambor, after which he taught in rural schools.

It would seem to Vasyl Kostiv expected a regular life. And everything turned out differently. His love of theater changed everything. For several years, he performed as a singer and actor in the theater "Russian talk" when suddenly, during a tour he was noticed by Mykola Sadovsky, about whom I have already told you. Vasily was invited to join their company. "In the summer, I went to another young actor Costiv, who later played under the name of Verkhovynets. This young but very musical guy gave me the idea to translate the opera "Pebbles" and "Cavalleria Rusticana".

In the theater, Verhovinets was an actor, and choirmaster and conductor, as well as choreographer. Sofia Tobilevych wrote of him: "Dance troupe was in charge of young, very capable guy from Galicia. Unfortunately, the memory has not kept its name. But he has to be remembered, he was a very talented person and has been known not only in dance but also in singing and music. In the days when the theater prepared to opera performances, the young artist was very useful to Sadovsky. "

He later changed the theater, was a conductor, led the chorus, and the most memorable thing – he was the first theorist of Ukrainian folk dance. He made first Ukrainian ballet "Mr. Kanovskyy." Later, with his wife Evdokia Dolya they organized first female country vocal and choreographic ensemble called "Zhinhorans."

He admired folk dances, studied them whole his life. Dedicated a whole textbook to it - "Theory of Ukrainian folk tank."

Unfortunately, Verkhovinets’ life ended tragically. Several times he was arrested, government tried to incriminate him belonging to the "Union for the Liberation of Ukraine" organization, but could not fabricate the necessary evidences. When he was arrested for the third time, he was forcibly made to confess the fact that in 1919 he organized in Poltava rebel revolt against Soviet power. Vasyl was accused of espionage for Poland. The final of this case was previously known. Verkhovynets was sentenced to death, he was executed on the 11th of April, 1938. And, of course, posthumously rehabilitated.

Here's a she, the fate of "Ukrainian dance magician." We all should know who gave their lives so that we could watch the wonderful Ukrainian dance performances.
