Today Ukrainian by ancient tradition celebrate Forgiveness Sunday. On this day, people have to remember those they have offended and apologize wholeheartedly.

According to the Christian rite, you cannot fat with sins of the soul. Therefore, we must talk and go to visit those, who we offended, even if we didn’t want that. Also, we have to be ready to forgive the people, who will ask for forgiveness, though it is very difficult.

Forgiveness Sunday also symbolizes the end of winter cold and the final arrival of spring. So, this day was traditionally festive. Families prepared dumplings with cheese, participated in the mass festivities, danced and competed. Was burned an effigy symbolizing winter.

The ritual dinner of Forgiveness Sunday was called zahovyny. This was the last generous table before Lent, although it was not allowed to eat meat and drink alcohol. From that day people stopped eating dairy products, so the last dish of the day of our forefathers was made of the eggs.
