On this day in 1953 in the Soviet embassy in Tel Aviv was an explosion. Representatives of the movement "Malchut Yisrael" ("Kingdom of Israel") Mankes Yosef and his supporters planted a bomb near the building to express a protest against the "doctor’s case" that was fabricated by the Stalinist regime. The explosion wounded the wife of the ambassador Klavdia Ershova, the driver, the administrative manager and his wife. A few days after the incident, the Soviet Union announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel. The reason of attack in the Soviet press, of course, was not showed.

On the 13th of January, 1953 in the newspaper "Pravda" and other mouthpieces of the USSR came TASS message: "Recently, the state security bodies uncovered the terrorist group of doctors who set out treatment to kill active life figures of the Soviet Union [... ] Members of terrorist groups were linked to international Jewish bourgeois-nationalist organization "Joint" created by American intelligence for allegedly providing material aid to Jews in other countries. " Everyone understood that it was genuinely anti-Semitic case - 6 of 9 detainees were Jews, others were taken into custody "to cover." Other people were continued to arrest, particularly in Kiev, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk.

What was a prerequisite of this case? Death of Andrei Zhdanov, the famous Soviet leader, initiator ideological campaign, which we know as "zhdanovschyna." During the campaign from withering criticism suffered Maxim Rilsky, Olexander Dovzhenko and Vladimir Sosyura.

Andrei Zhdanov had heart problems, he went to a resort near Lake Valdai. There he became ill. To save him came several doctors. The case was fabricated in order to please Stalin. For interviews of imprisoned, inside the prison of the Ministry of State Security of the USSR under Stalin approved sketches was created a special torture chamber. It was like a surgical room, for tortures was used medical instrument. The leader of the Soviet Union read daily interrogations. He demanded from the MGB the maximum development of the version of the Zionist nature of the conspiracy. Afterwords, the arrested doctor Myron Vovsi under the pressure of the investigation confirmed that he had received the directive of "extermination of cadres of the USSR" by the US organization "Joint" from the doctor Shymeliovych and known Jewish bourgeois nationalist Mikhoels in Moscow. Other members of terrorist group (doctors Vinogradov, Kogan and Egorov) according to the MGB were old British intelligence agents.

International reaction came soon. US President Dwight Eisenhower said that "US intelligence agencies never came into contact with the arrested professors." United Kingdom, China - all demanded that the truth from Soviet Union. But it was not the final goal, and anti-Semitic hysteria started. "Soviet people" drowned in hatred, began layoffs of Jews, especially physicians and pharmacists. Media called for decisive exposing of "hidden enemies of our people."

The case ended abruptly with the death of Joseph Stalin. Arrested doctors were quietly released, no information about rehabilitation and guidance on restoration work were given, but all that happened was asked to forget.
