Friends!
Yesterday was the birthday of Alexander Goldman - prominent Ukrainian physicist of Jewish origin.
He was born in Warsaw, and when the boy was 10, the family moved to Kyiv. Alexander Genrikhovich was capable k, he graduated with honors from Alexander high school, then studied mathematics at Kiev University of St. Vladimir. He chose physics, entered the University of Leipzig. But after getting a doctorate, Alexander decided to return to Kyiv. But, because of Jewish origin he was denied a position at the university. Therefore, Goldman returned to Leipzig, then - went to work to Petrograd.
But Kyiv still called Goldman. He returned and became a teacher of physics of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He always submerged in a whirlpool of ideas. He launched studying the physics of semiconductors in Ukraine. A small laboratory created by Alexander Genrikhovich grew into the institution that we now know as the Institute of Physics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Goldman founded and became the editor of the first physical magazine in Ukraine "Physical note."
It would seem - a man with such a bright mind has to continue to work and develop science in the country. He was even elected as academician of the USSR, was made a member of the Bureau. But not for a long time.
In 1938, Alexander Goldman was arbitrarily arrested by the NKVD and expelled member of the Academy. He was sentenced for "terrorism" and "Ukrainian bourgeois nationalism". During interrogation the man was tortured, but he did not recognize his fictitious guilt. He did not sign any denunciations of colleagues. Goldman was convicted and sent to exile in Kazakhstan. By the end of it, he has had no right to return to Ukraine for 15 years. He worked as a teacher of physics and Latin in schools and colleges. Time passed - and Alexander Genrikhovich yet came back home. And has worked for the good of Ukrainian science for another 12 years. He died in Kiev on the 30th of December , 1971.
Friends! We appreciate how easy we are now able to work for the country to develop it. Compared to our ancestors, for whom every good deed in the name of prosperity of Ukraine could cost a life. Do not waste this chance.
